Quality Begins in the Vineyard

Piergiorgio Castellani, who produces the Cala de' Poeti line of Italian wine, is a surfer who finds time during his West Coast trips to ride the waves in San Diego. The Castellanis have been exporting their own estate wines from their home in Tuscany since 1903, and Piergiorgio Castellani’s home is located in the center of a vineyard. As he says, "The quality of the wine begins in the vineyard.”

The Art Behind the Bottle

Mikki Senkarik, the artist who created the original painting featured on the beautiful Cala de’ Poeti labels, has a BFA from the University of South Florida where she honed her craft and her work is now exhibited in galleries around the world. This prolific artist paints daily, often using oil, depicting flowers and landscapes overflowing with exuberance, much like the flavors of Cala de’ Poeti.

Cala de' Poeti Wines

The Cala de' Poeti wine labels feature reproductions of oil paintings created at an artist residency on the Ceppaiano Estate, which the Castellani’s have dedicated to art and culture.

Sangiovese I.G.T.

Sangiovese is the most popular Italian wine grape, producing smooth, velvety, meal-ready wines that are quintessentially Italian. Like its 95-point Platinum Medal-winning 2015 vintage, 2016 Cala de' Poeti Sangiovese is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, and hails from Puglia, the olive oil-rich heel of Italy’s boot. This harmonious and fruity red will liven up any meal with its flavors of tart cherry and red plum.

Pinot Grigio I.G.T.

From Terre Siciliane, 2017 Cala de' Poeti Pinot Grigio is a quintessentially crisp and zesty Italian white. It’s an attractive straw yellow with greenish reflections in the glass, offering a fresh and harmonious bouquet with notes of apple, peach, and hawthorn. Highlight this tasty Italian wine’s refreshing nature by serving it ice cold with white meats, fish, and our favorite: risotto with artichokes.

Vermentino Toscana I.G.T.

Made from 100% Vermentino grapes that were nourished on the vine by Tuscan sea breezes, 2015 Cala de' Poeti Vermentino bursts with opulent flavor and a radiant freshness. This carefree Italian white has a Platinum Medal-winning heritage thanks to its complex notes of peaches, flowers, sage, and rosemary, and nice minerality. Serve it chilled with chicken salad.

Morellino di Scansano D.O.C.G.

Fruity and dry Cala de' Poeti Morellino di Scansano is a classic wine from Maremma, the scenic stretch of the Tuscan coast that is known as Italy’s Wild West. This exciting new vintage has a voluptuous texture, with aromas of fresh cherries and plums that are joined by blackberries and violets on the palate. This wine has a great complexity, with soft tannins that make it the ideal match for grilled red meat, lasagna, and mature cheeses.

Maremma Toscana D.O.C.

Known as Italy’s Wild West, the Maremma section of the Tuscan coastline features breathtaking beaches full of white sand that give way to magnificent, hilly vineyards. Maremma’s sun, sand, and clay work together to produce wines of exceptional quality, like 2015 Cala de' Poeti Maremma Toscana. With a 96-point Platinum Medal-winning heritage, this complex, ruby red Tuscan favorite draws in the drinker with intense, vinous aromas that lead into flavors of cherry, blackberry, and violet. 2015 Cala de' Poeti Maremma Toscana’s soft tannins and dry feel make it a delicious complement to grilled red meat, lasagna, and aged cheeses.

Montepulciano D'Abruzzo D.O.C.

Made from 100% Montepulciano grapes grown in a restricted territory on the picturesque central Italian hills, 2016 Cala de' Poeti Montepulciano D’Abruzzo is aged in oak for six months, resulting in a robust, medium-bodied, ruby-red wine. This dry and harmonious classic tantalizes with savory aromas of tobacco and leather and pairs perfectly with pizza, pasta, meat dishes, and any flavorful Mediterranean foods. The 2015 vintage won a 95-point Platinum Medal in the 2017 Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition and expectations are running high for the 2016.

This paired well with our pasta dish. Great nose with a berry finish. Smooth.
— Debi P., 2015 Cala de' Poeti Maremma Toscana D.O.C.
Another tasty selection from this winery. Nice nose, and just enough fruity flavor. This is among my favorite offerings.
— Tony, 2017 Cala de' Poeti Sangiovese I.G.T.
I love this wine. I can have it alone or with dinner while hanging out with my friends. It’s so delicious.
— Izzy, 2015 Cala de' Poeti Montepulciano D'Abruzzo D.O.C.
Very good. Really enjoy it. Has a great taste!
— Roe Roe, 2017 Cala de' Poeti Pinot Grigio I.G.T.
Extraordinary! Possibly one of the finest Italian white wines I’ve enjoyed — and I spent five years in Italy, much of it drinking wine! This white is sophisticated, smooth, and full-bodied enough to be enjoyed with a variety of dishes.
— Edwin WV, 2015 Cala de' Poeti Vermentino Toscana I.G.T.
